Littoral Drift reflects on the tension between beach aesthetics, nostalgia and the reality of pollution and erosion encroaching on littoral spaces. Aiming to hack nostalgis and irony to activate curiosity, these personal reflections on vacation rock-pooling are juxtaposed against the reality of pollution and erosion. The research is inspired by the geologic phenomenon of sand pedestal formations by wind; Jane Bennett’s Vibrancy of Matter; and James Lovegood’s idea of Gaia, the system that give life to the planet Earth. Made from collated newspapers that present current and past reporting on climate change the process of making the work was understood as an act of care, which kept both human and non-human welfare in my mind. Wrapping these artworks, first in newspaper, then plaster of paris bandages, and then a hard rough texture of sand is my act own of maintenance, and wishful thinking at time of climate transition.
